...Ask any well known medium today about the importance of grounding, meditation, and
breath work, and they will all tell you the same thing. They all learned these basics at the
beginning of their Mediumship training. With most, these practices are still an important
part of their daily routine.
The Essentials 1: Cleansing Your Energy Field
Just as we need to cleanse our physical body, we need to cleanse our energy field. Our
energy field wrappings are made up of electromagnetic energy and we pick up gunk and
grime just like our cars do causing us to feel stagnate and dull. The act of cleansing this
field will help you feel lighter and peppier. It will also help promote clarity of thought
and enable your channels to be more clear for the communication process with the Spirit
realm.
I always use an exercise called the Screen Door at the beginning of all my classes. As in
all the exercises presented in this course, you may want to become familiar with the
process before trying it by reading over it several times or by recording the exercise on
some sort of recording device. You can also use 3 x 5 index cards with the key steps
written on them. For this exercise, it’s better to be sitting up.
Take a few deep breaths and become comfortable in your seat. Take another very
deep breath and forcibly expel it getting rid of any stale air in your lungs. Imagine
yourself on one side of an old fashioned wooden screen door. The frame of the door
is made up of wood and the rest is entirely made up of mesh screen. As you face
this door, sense a transparent version of yourself moving through the mesh screen
part of the door. Know that all unwanted energies of fear, worry, any doubts,
memories of unpleasant past experiences, or any other negative thoughts are
automatically filtered out the moment you pass through the screen. Visualize these
energies as some sort of residue left behind stuck to the screen part. Sense or feel
what it is like to be your genuine self without these heavy toxic energies attached.
In your mind, place in front of you another screen door with an even finer mesh right
after the first one. Now step through it. Actually feel any lingering negative residue
being pulled from your transparent body and left behind on the screen. See or sense
yourself in your mind’s eye bright and light-filled purified of all that is not your true
and joyful essence...
A Quick and Powerful Clearing and Cleansing Technique:
In a sitting or standing position, say to yourself or out loud, “I am the Light. The Light is
in me. The Light moves through me. The Light surrounds me. The Light protects me”. As
you repeat this several times, you can envision that light moving around and through you
and that you are fully protected from unwanted energies and thought forms. This is truly
a powerful visualization and affirmation technique. I use it all the time!
The Essentials 2: The Importance of Protecting Your Energy Field
All of us are surrounded with higher-level entities such as spirit guides, angels, group
teachers, etc. Unfortunately, there exists another set of entities which hang around as
well. These beings, while when alive, were often engaged in the most depraved of
activities, such as narcotics addiction, severe alcoholism, murder, rape, grand theft,
physical abuse, and so forth. After passing through the doorway of death, these entities
might have elected to stay earthbound; perhaps intent upon wreaking havoc on the living.
Their abode is a dark shadowy place called the lower astral plane, and they co-exist
among like souls. From that vantage point, they attempt interaction with the living intent
upon doing mischief...
On another note, there have been throughout history and still are people who want to
dabble in the darker realms thinking they can use these shadowy entities to do their
bidding. These misguided souls are power driven, money hungry, or out for revenge.
Folks, this is a sure recipe for hurting and even destroying your own life so please don’t
mess there. All efforts in this area usually end up with a negative boomerang effect. What
you send out to the Universe will come back to you three fold! And if you wish to do
harm to others for any purpose, be assured that harm will come back to you or loved ones
around you in some form.
If your intentions are pure and you follow the suggested methods for cleansing and
protection, you will have nothing to fear.
About Using an Ouija Board
There are many who view the Ouija board as a device...
Building Your Bubble of Protection
Building a bubble of protection takes just a few moments so please make it one of the
very first things you do in your developmental practices. I “build” one every morning.
Below is a basic exercise which can be done individually or in a group:
1. While sitting or lying down, envision a beautiful and powerful force field
surrounding your body. This force field can be white, gold, or even multi
colored. For protection purposes the colors of white or gold are the best to
use. Ask your guardian angel or any figure of spiritual power to be with
you. I always ask Archangel Michael to come in for myself.
2. Construct the force field as either an oval or bubble shape. Now “see” this
field become very strong. Placing an overlay of roses all around the
erected field is a nice finishing touch. The rose is one of the highest
symbols of Spirit there is. By using it, you can’t go wrong. Now you have
an oval of light protection around you.
3. Over that oval or bubble of light, overlay a fine mesh made of strong cords
of light...
The Essentials 3: The Importance of Grounding
In all psychic, holistic, and Mediumship training, one of the first things we learn how to
do is to GROUND. What exactly is grounding? Grounding is simply the act of aligning
yourself with earthly energies which brings your conscious awareness more fully into
your body and anchoring it. In other words, you are simply centering your body and mind
in the space you are in. The benefits of grounding are numerous. Grounding provides a
support framework for you to feel more secure in the world. For those who feel scattered
a lot of the time, grounding will help you to feel calmer and more put together...
Posturing for Grounding (includes protection and meditation practices as well).
In regards to Mediumship development, most agree the best way to place your body for
these practices is pictured in Figure 1 (called by some the Egyptian posture.. The
familiar Lotus position is shown in Figure 2. It is more difficult to use--if not downright
uncomfortable. Not only that, but I feel it restricts the flow of energy in the body.
However, if you are more comfortable with and prefer the method shown in Fig. 2, then
by all means use it.
Figure 1., Figure 2.

Grounding Method 1:
1. Place yourself in one of the positions above.
2. Slowly breathe in through your nose sending the breath very deep into your stomach area
and exhale through your mouth.
3. Using your mind’s eye, imagine there is a pipeline or cord which extends from the bottom of
your spine and flows right through the floor and down into the earth. The color of this hollow
cord (pipeline) can be anything. I usually use colors of white, gold, or green.
4. Now really sense this cord as actually existing. You may start feeling a warm sensation in
your lower body which is an indication of how well you are focusing. Project the cord as
deep into the earth as you can finally reaching the earth’s core. Imagine that the cord is
wrapping around the core. Your next step is to flush any negative thought forms residing in
your consciousness down that cord. Do this now for a few moments...
Grounding and Protection Method 2:
At times I like to vary the grounding exercises used in class by visualizing an oak tree.
This exercise also includes a method of what we call “running energy” to further clear
your energy field.
1. Sit or lay down allowing yourself several minutes for this exercise with no interruptions.
2. By using deep abdominal breathing, intake a breath through your nose very deep into
your stomach area and exhale with your mouth slightly open in an “O” shape. Do this
several times.
3. Next visualize a large oak tree and you are that tree. Imagine that from the waist down
or trunk of this tree, you are extending a system of massive roots reaching very deep
into the earth.
4. As you inhale, visualize these roots are alive and growing and as you exhale, the roots
are going deeper and deeper into to the ground. Push down through the roots any
negative energy or thought forms you feel may be lurking within your energy field...
Three Fast and Easy Techniques for Grounding:
1. This method is usually for those who have already practiced grounding a lot and want an
immediate grounding; especially if they are in public or in a tense situation. I call it Fast
Track Grounding. Visualize yourself in a bubble of white or gold light. Now in real time,
look down at your feet and be in the moment of where you are. You mentally say to
yourself “I am now grounded”.
2. Reach out and place your hand on an object--any nearby object and look at your hand
for a moment. A wooden surface is the best. The simple act of doing this brings your...
The Essentials 4: Breath Work
"Practicing regular mindful breathing can be calming and energizing and can even help
with stress-related health problems ranging from panic attacks to digestive disorders."
~Andrew Weil, M.D.
Breath work is one more of the essentials needed to be mastered in Mediumship
development. Breath is life and frankly you can’t go without it for more than two
minutes. Conscious manipulation of the breath can bring the body more into focus,
expand awareness, and promote a greater capacity for relaxation which is vital in all
psychic development endeavors.
Doing breathing exercises will instill a calm peaceful feeling once your body gets used to
it. Breath work has been used to treat mental illness, jump start the metabolism, and bring
about healing of all kinds. In Mediumship development, deep breathing can induce a light
to very deep trance state of consciousness. We will cover more about this in later lessons.
Deep breathing is not difficult and we do it naturally during sleep. Hence a simple way to
learn how to breathe properly is to simulate sleep. Lie down, close your eyes, relax the
whole body, drop the chin, and imagine that you are asleep thus letting your breathing
becomes deeper and deeper. Try and stay awake, of course, during this part of the
exercise.
As you are learning to breathe correctly, I suggest that in the beginning you put one hand
on your stomach and the other on your chest. This way you may have a better sense of
how deeply you are bringing breath into your body--into stomach or chest. The hand on
your tummy should rise higher than the one on the chest and that is referred to as
abdominal breathing. As you inhale, make sure the stomach is extending out with the air
taken in and not dropping down. This may seen unnatural at first, however it is the
correct way to breath and is very cool once you get used to it.
Try a Very Easy Breathing Exercise:
1. Take in a few slow and deep breaths through your nose. Take the air into the abdomen
first, then into the chest.
2. Hold the breath for several seconds—maybe around 4 seconds worth...
Breath Work Exercise 1:
1. Lie down or sit in a comfortable chair while maintaining good posture. Your body should
be as relaxed as possible. Close your eyes. Scan your body for tension.
2. Breathe through your nose. Pay attention to your breathing. Place one hand on the part
of your abdomen that seems to rise and fall the most with each breath. If this spot is in
your UPPER chest you are not utilizing the lower part of your lungs...
Advanced Breath Work Exercise 2:
The Complete Breath, as defined by yoga, involves the entire respiratory system and not
only includes the portions of the lungs used in high, low and middle breathing, but
expands the lungs so as to take in more air. The complete breath is not just deep
breathing; it is the deepest possible breathing. In yoga deep breathing, you start by filling the lower part of the lungs first. You then fill
the middle and upper part of the lungs. When exhaling, you first empty the upper part of
the lungs, then the middle, and last of all, the lower part.
This process, however, is not divided into three separate actions...
The Essentials 5: Meditation
Do I hear groans? Yes, my friends. Meditation is the true key to Mediumship
development.
Meditation has been long been understood to help center and ground the body. For the
developing medium, meditation helps with the relaxation and focus process required to
open channels and the magnetic force field to the non-physical world. When one
meditates consciously, the pineal gland in the center of the brain activates and opens to a
cosmic stream towards a higher dimension thus raising the vibration of the medium.
When that higher vibration level is reached, a space is created through mutual consent for
Spirits to lower their frequencies and make contact with the medium in the physical
world...
In Summary
By now you have learned the Basic 5 Essentials for the beginnings of Mediumship development.
You have learned the importance of clearing (cleansing) your body, protecting yourself (or group), grounding
techniques, breath work exercises, and several easy meditative exercises.
Might I suggest that you now take the important steps listed below and jot them down on
a 3 x 5 card ...

Evidential Mental Mediumship: Where the Spirit who is communicating relays information which the sitter or person receiving the reading can identify the Spirit sending it and offers validation of the truth of the communication.
Inspirational Mental Mediumship: Where the information received is of a higher nature and intended for all who attend. The information is usually sent to inspire, guide, and teach spiritual lessons. This is also called channeling.
How does a Medium Actually “See” and Perceive Images?
Spirits communicate with us in thought forms whether it is their appearance they are transmitting or emotions. Seeing what the Spirit is sending is called Clairvoyance. There are hundreds, no maybe thousands of books written on the subject of clairvoyance. Basically, clairvoyance is enabled due to the stimulation of a gland in our head known as the pineal gland. It manifests in the third eye (6th chakra) between the eyes located just above the eyebrows which moves us to the next point. There are two ways of “seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touch”, etc. while doing Mediumship. One way is called subjective and the other objective clairvoyance.
SUBJECTIVE: Subjective Mediumship is the type of information received as either an impression or a thought form. It is more of a personal experience for the medium.
OBJECTIVE: Objective Mediumship is information received as something appearing to be real (as in actual hearing or seeing with the physical senses). This could be witnessed by others in the room.

When a person passes to the other side, whether it is the result of a trauma, a long illness, or by natural causes, it takes them a while to adjust to their new vibrational surroundings. In time (although there’s no real time in the Spirit world) they begin to lose vivid picture memories of what it was like on earth. Their memory of how they appeared in life may start to get hazy in their minds and that is one of the reasons it is sometimes difficult for the medium to get a clear picture of the images the Spirit is trying to send.
